What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are an important part of your oral health, created to address a gap in your teeth from having a permanent tooth removed. While one of the features of a dental bridge is that it will restore your smile, it also serves important tasks:

  • Maintaining appropriate jaw alignment and proper bite
  • Distributing the force of your bite so that you chew and speak correctly
  • Preventing teeth from “drifting” out of position
Dental Bridges Procedure

Teeth bridge procedure

A dental bridge is a fairly simple procedure but highly individualized. One of our dentists will first take casts or impressions of your teeth which are sent to a lab to build the elements of the dental bridge to your unique needs. It typically takes a minimum of three appointments to ensure the correct fit to your bite.

A dental bridge is created by slightly reshaping the two teeth on each side of the gap by removing enamel during the first appointment when the impressions are then taken. Our dentist will put into place a temporary bridge that makes it easy for you to eat while waiting to return for your permanent bridge.

The second appointment involves placing the two dental crowns, and inserting a false tooth, called a pontic, in between the two crowns that is then adhered to the crowns. The bridge refers to the entire three-tooth device of crowns and pontic.

Dental bridges are typically made with porcelain and metal, but may also include ceramics. If you feel insecure about dental bridges consider dental implants which have long-term results.

Dental Bridge FAQ

One type of dental bridge is attached to teeth that have crowns attached to them.

Another type of dental bridge is attached to dental implants. Instead of attaching the bridge to crown-covered natural teeth, a dental implant or two is placed in the mouth. The bridge is then attached to the dental implant.

After either type of bridge your smile will look great and you will have the function of your missing teeth back.

Dental bridges replace missing teeth between neighboring teeth. Bridges are used when fewer teeth are missing. Dentures are used when all or many of the teeth are missing
What is a Traditional Fixed Bridge?

Traditional fixed bridges are the most common type of bridge used by dentists. A crown is placed on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth for secure attachment. In some cases, an implant is used instead of a tooth. The pontic, or artificial tooth of the bridge, is most commonly made from porcelain or ceramics, but can be made of other materials such as gold.

Dental bridges are removed from your mouth, and then brushed with a toothbrush and plain water. Brush your dental bridge over a sink partly filled with water to prevent them from breaking if dropped.
Dental bridges usually last about 10 years if cared for properly. Many dentures last 15 years or longer.
